About The Hive

theHive was founded in march 2014 where it launched for the first time at The Source Africa Trade show in Cape Town. The brand has always been inspired by nature, texture and intricacy found in form. Over a very short time theHive has evolved into a focused womenswear resort and swimwear range. Each piece is hand designed by owner Jade Ashleigh who then works her artwork into each unique costume/ dress with paint by the guidance and support of African Sketchbook. Paint is mixed with binding agents specifically made for poly fabrics and then heat cured to set the paint work like a print. This process has been vigorously tried and tested in Germany.

The dream of theHive has been there for almost a decade, but the vision for the brand only came to light in 2013. It was inspired by the owners passion for nature and the beauty in people that she found on her travels in South East Asia and Spain. theHive aims to promote local design and manufacturing and to be a part of a global movement of each piece telling a story. For theHive to be more than ‘just a dress’. Each piece is hand painted into one by one making the garment a piece of wearable art.

About the designer: Jade Ashleigh

I’m Jade Ashleigh (Saunders) and I am the designer of theHive. I studied and received a BA degree in fashion design, garment construction and illustration from FEDISA in Cape town in 2012. I went on to coming second in the J&B best dress competition, winning the award for ‘the most innovative collection in 3rd year’ and having work featured in the Style Africa magazine. I then went travelling to gain inspiration to start this label and launched it in March 2014 at The Source Africa Trade show. I have been lucky enough to get featured on international Fashion TV, Glamour South Africa, Grazia South Africa, Cosmopolitan and Glamour as well as local newspapers and international magazine: Elements New York. I have also had my work featured on a few episodes of Top Billing, radio stations and dressed African face of Elizabeth Arden; Adeolo Ariyo. My work has recently been worn at The Cannes Film festival and has just been launched at SA Fashion week as part of the first ever resort collections show.

I absolutely love what I so, I am a passionate designer who believes in something called meraki ( leaving a piece of my soul in everything I do). I always strive for greatness and believe there is beauty in everything around me. I find inspiration in the weirdest of places and can’t wait to see where this journey takes me. I love working with new people, there is always so much to learn and appreciate. Through other peoples' knowledge you can only grow and be more inspired. last year I was lucky enough to have been sponsored by WEARSA in association with Planet Productions where together we promote local design and manufacturing to the public and to the international industry through pop up shows and exhibitions.I opened my first store in dec. and look forward to taking theHive internationally.

As well as being a designer I am also a personal stylist for Top Billing and work closely with my partner in their family business. I believe I have got to where I am through hard work and balance. Being open to suggestions and taking the time to learn something new every day. I hope you enjoy my work just as much as I enjoy creating it.
